Our Musical Legacy

Creating Summers of Excellence

Founded in 1942 by Dean Ella Opperman, the camps had their start as the Florida State College for Women Band School. And though the camps themselves have experienced many changes over the years, our commitment to excellence in music education remains at the core.

We now offer one of the most comprehensive music camps in the country.  Music opportunities for elementary through high school are offered each summer to students from throughout the country, and indeed, the world.  Students of all abilities are welcome.  We pride ourselves on offering positive musical experiences for everyone, in a safe and creative environment.

Our primary goal is to create a positive musical foundation for students to build upon as they continue to grow and develop as musicians.

“Many of these students receive wonderful music instruction in their school throughout the year, and by keeping students playing and practicing over the summer months, their retention going into the new school year is much higher than students who don’t keep up their practice over the summer break months.  Our camp provides additional opportunities for parents, teachers, and students who wish to continue having music as part of their education” said Dr. Steven Kelly, Professor of Music Education and Director of the FSU Summer Camps since 2000.  “I hope that everyone will come and see what their summer can sound like.”
