Performance Entrepreneurship Competition

Overview

The College of Music sponsors an opportunity for a student recital at Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall), one of the most prestigious performance venues in the world. The concert is part of a University-wide initiative entitled Noles in NYC, which showcases the fine arts at Florida State University in a week-long series of concerts, lectures, and performances in New York City. The College offers this opportunity to one or more of its premier student performers. The focus of this proposal is to encourage the highest level of musical performance in conjunction with the development of entrepreneurial skills that are important for success as a 21st century musician. This showcase concert includes:

  1. Carnegie Hall Recital and dress rehearsal;
  2. budget of $2,000 for audience development to be used at the discretion of the performer(s);
  3. airfare, hotel, and meal stipends (up to a maximum amount determined annually by the College);
  4. additional promotion through College and University publicity and marketing mechanisms.

Application Procedure

Submit to the Selection Committee an application and audition portfolio, which includes the following:

  1. a description of the proposed program, with explanations of its musical merits and value for the Noles in NYC showcase;
  2. a recording of the student(s) performing multiple excerpts from the proposed program (ca. 10 minutes in length, total); files may be turned in on a compact disc or thumb drive;*
  3. a press kit, including photos (in both hard copy and JPG formats, with a minimum resolution of 1200 X 1200 and a maximum file size of 4 MB for each photo; Carnegie Hall only uses photos formatted as squares, so please include some that are formatted to meet that requirement), reviews (if available), sample postcard and poster designs for this and/or other of your performances, a website, contact information, and any other relevant promotional materials;
  4. a business development plan for effective promotion of the Carnegie Hall recital that includes how the $2,000 stipend for audience development will be used. Include details regarding how this concert may be leveraged to provide you or your ensemble with further opportunities. Please note: Failure to meet your stated marketing goals and objectives will result in the loss of the stipend.
  5. a proposed budget for travel expenses.

Evaluation

Applications will be judged on the professional appearance of the press kit, the overall quality of the application materials and recorded musical excerpts, the originality and feasibility of the concert program, and audience development plans included in the proposal.
