Instruction For Advanced Pianists
The FSU Piano Institute provides comprehensive instruction for up to 24 advanced players who are looking to enhance their keyboard studies over the summer in a dynamic university setting. The Institute offers intensive training on piano performance through daily master classes and workshops featuring technique, interpretation, music theory, classical piano literature, and related topics.

Rigorous Class Schedule
Students will receive daily instruction in piano literature, music theory, varied musicianship topics, and performance masterclasses.

Private Lessons
Students will receive four private lessons – once per day on four days throughout the week – and will have ample time for individual practice in a private practice room.

Performance
The Institute will conclude with a final performance on Saturday, June 22 at 10am.  All students will perform at this recital, and families are welcome to attend.

Evening Activities
The week is filled with musical and social activities that are both fun and challenging. Activities are planned for each evening and will include faculty and staff recitals, recreational outings, practice time and more.  A full schedule will be provided before camp begins.

Eligibility

Eligible campers must be in grades 8-12 during the ’23-’24 school year.   Students that are younger than grade 8, but have extensive experience, may be considered; please contact the camp office for more information.

As this camp is for advanced pianists, an audition is required for acceptance. The deadline to submit an audition online is March 18, 2024.

Florida State University is committed to providing quality education to all qualified students and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, age, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. Please contact our office to discuss any questions or accommodations that may need to be made for your camper at least three weeks prior to the start of camp.

Audition Requirements

Audition applications are processed through the online application form. Please do not send us audition applications or materials via email.

Applicants will be required to supply the following:

  • An application form covering general questions about the applicant and specific questions about the audition repertoire and content.
  • A brief, one-page resumé of the applicant’s experience in piano performance. This may include school-related musical activities, special performances, other music camps or festivals attended, private lesson experience and any other pertinent musical details. Click here for a sample.
  • Link(s) to a YouTube, Vimeo, or other hosting platform of the applicant performing the following:
    1. Two (2) solo piano pieces of contrasting styles from the classical piano literature.
These pieces should be memorized, and should provide an accurate, balanced representation of your current technical and musical capabilities.
One piece should be in a quicker tempo, and one piece should feature a slower, more lyrical character.
Please remember these should be classical pieces. There is no required length; but ideally the full audition repertoire should total anywhere between five and fifteen minutes.
    2. Two (2) scales of your choice, Major or minor, hands together, four octaves.

It is preferred that applicants compile their performances into a single video rather than separate videos, but separate videos will be accepted. Upload audition video(s) onto YouTube, Vimeo, or another hosting platform. In order to avoid copyright issues with audition repertoire, please set your video to “Unlisted” on YouTube which will still enable us to view it via the link you provide. We will not accept video files via Dropbox or Google Drive links.

Please submit all video links clearly labeled. The video should clearly show the pianist’s upper body/arms and the keyboard.
