Javacya presents Global Women of Distinction in concert
Full story from the Tallahassee Democrat
Tallahassee audiences will experience an extraordinary evening of international artistry when the Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra presents Heritage & Harmony: Global Women of Distinction at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral at 7 p.m. April 23.
Featuring internationally acclaimed soprano Marcía Porter, visionary harpist Noël Wan, and celebrated Polish violinist Kinga Augustyn, the concert brings together three remarkable artists whose performances have captivated audiences across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
It is the kind of world class program that seldom appears in a single evening — and Tallahassee will have it right here at home.
At the heart of the program is a work that deserves far more frequent performance: Florence Price’s Violin Concerto No. 2, presented in its entirety.
Written by the pioneering African American composer whose music is now experiencing a major international renaissance, the concerto is both lyrical and electrifying. In the hands of Kinga Augustyn — recognized for her brilliant technique and expressive depth — the work promises to be one of the season’s most unforgettable performances.
Porter, whose career spans opera, concert stages, and major orchestral collaborations, will present a selection of works that showcase the emotional power and beauty of the classical vocal tradition.
Wan, praised internationally for her artistry and innovative programming, will bring the shimmering elegance and expressive range of the harp to the evening’s musical landscape.
The concert is presented through a partnership between St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral and the Javacya Arts Conservatory, organizations committed to expanding access to world class artistic experiences in the Tallahassee community.
The evening will also highlight the Javacya Elite Chamber Orchestra, one of the region’s most distinctive ensembles. Some members, now in their 20s, began their musical journeys with the conservatory as toddlers, progressing through years of rigorous training before continuing their studies in college and beyond.
Today, the orchestra blends these long-time conservatory musicians with graduate students and outstanding music majors from Florida A&M University and Florida State University.
The performance will be conducted by Kyle Dickson, the rising Assistant Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, whose growing national reputation brings an additional level of excitement to the evening.
In a city known for its rich musical life, Heritage & Harmony: Global Women of Distinction promises an unforgettable night.
