College of Music Launches Brand-New Office of Student Success

TALLAHASSEE, January 2023 – The College of Music at Florida State University is pleased to announce the creation of the Office of Student Success (OSS), which will serve as the primary point of contact for undergraduate and graduate music students regarding issues related to their overall success at FSU and beyond. The OSS will also include a new physical space, with construction to the current facility beginning in Summer 2023.

Formerly known as ‘The Fishbowl’ (HMU 203), the OSS will be a centralized location for all issues related to the academic music experience and will serve as a point of contact for students from the time of recruitment through graduation and beyond. It will be co-facilitated by Andy Hunt and Emily Clark, our new Student Success Coordinators. The College of Music recognizes that there are particular challenges and opportunities that are inherent within the discipline of music, including musician health and wellness, career preparation, professional employment opportunities, and performance anxiety , among many others. Collegiate musicians need to address, develop, and begin to master these skills during their academic career in order to be successful in their careers after graduation.

The Office of Student Success will collaborate with community partners and resources across FSU’s campus, such as the Counseling Center and the Career Center, in order to connect music students with existing opportunities and streamline opportunities for music students to engage with our campus partners. The OSS will also develop new professional development opportunities and events that are catered specifically to the needs of music students. Some of the subjects we intend to cover include:

  • Musician’s Health and Wellness
    • (yoga, mindfulness, Alexander Technique, repetitive care)
  • Financial Workshops
  • Memorization Skills
  • Student Accessibility
  • Performance Anxiety
  • Industry panels
  • Faculty panels
  • Career services
  • Alumni networking

We believe this is an important next step in developing 21st century artists and we are confident that the new Office of Student Success will maximize and diversify the student experience in ways that are meaningful and important to all music students at FSU.
