FSU Opera Presents Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State University College of Music’s Opera program invites audiences on a journey of temptation, downfall, and redemption with its production of Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, running from March 27–30 at Opperman Music Hall.

A unique blend of classical opera and modern satire, The Rake’s Progress follows Tom Rakewell, a man who trades stability for the promise of wealth and indulgence—only to find himself ensnared by the devil’s cunning. With a captivating score by Stravinsky and a libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman, this opera explores timeless themes of love, morality, and the consequences of unchecked ambition.

Under the stage direction of James Marvel, Assistant Professor of Opera, and the musical leadership of Bernard McDonald, Director of Opera and Associate Professor of Opera, this production showcases the remarkable talent of FSU’s opera students. The production is managed by Matt Cooksey, Opera Program Manager, and features innovative staging and striking visuals that bring Stravinsky’s 20th-century masterpiece to life.
