Albert Tipton (1917-1997) was a flutist and composer who was Professor of Flute at FSU from 1968 to 1975.
As a young man he played with the National Symphony and in 1939 was a soloist with the All-American Youth Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski. He was second flute for the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1940-1946 and principal flute for the St. Louis Symphony and the Detroit Symphony in 1946-1956 and 1956-1968, respectively.
In 1975 he left FSU for a post as Professor of Flute at Rice University, where he remained until 1990. He was also involved with the Aspen Summer Music Festival for much of his career. Tipton has been the subject of a D.M.A. treatise, which may be consulted for more detailed biographical information.
This collection contains several boxes of reel-to-reel recordings, mostly of himself, including recitals and rehearsals as well as a few commercial recordings. Some of the reels are in poor condition.
