FSU Music in the News

Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid features College of Music

The Florida State University College of Music is proud to announce its feature on the acclaimed public television series Viewpoint with Dennis Quaid. The nationally broadcast segment highlights the College’s transformative role in shaping lives and communities through music education, performance, therapy, and outreach.

For more than 120 years, the FSU College of Music has stood as one of the leading music institutions in the nation. As the university celebrates the College’s 125th anniversary, Viewpoint captures the essence of its mission: to use music not only as an art form, but as a bridge to community, health, and human connection.

“Music is a force that unites, heals, and transforms,” the segment begins, underscoring the unspoken dialogue of emotion and humanity that drives the College’s programs. From student performers at Westminster Oaks retirement community to faculty and students bringing harp music into churches, hospitals, and nursing homes, the story illustrates how music’s reach extends far beyond the stage.

The feature also showcases the College’s renowned music therapy program, where students and professionals use music to achieve individualized goals, from improving communication to supporting neonatal care. “Music therapy makes a huge impact on the care of babies in the NICU in ways that people probably don’t even realize,” said one music therapist, describing improved digestion, bonding with parents, and other life-changing outcomes.

Faculty members also emphasize the importance of preparing students for lives of impact, whether as performers, educators, therapists, or arts leaders. “We want to be sure that our students are actively engaged in making music, in curating music, and in helping others to make music in the community as part of the fabric of what we do,” said College of Music leadership.

The segment celebrates the College’s uniquely comprehensive offerings. One of the original four academic units of Florida State University, the College of Music provides one of the broadest ranges of degree programs in the country. Students can pursue nearly any path in music, supported by a community that values collaboration and connection as much as artistry.

“Many of our students tell us that the sense of community they felt when they came here made them realize this was the right place for them,” the segment highlights. With more than 500 performances each year and ongoing partnerships throughout Tallahassee and beyond, the College ensures that its students’ education extends into the real world—where music often makes the greatest difference.

As the College looks ahead to the future, this national spotlight affirms what has always been central to its mission: that music enriches lives, connects people, and strengthens communities.
