The Florida State University Symphony Orchestra will take the stage for their first performance of the semester on Saturday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Ruby Diamond Concert Hall. Originally scheduled to open their season on September 27, the orchestra’s performance was canceled due to Hurricane Helene. Now, they return with renewed energy and anticipation for an unforgettable concert.
Dr. Alexander Jimenez, director of ensemble, reflected on the upcoming performance, saying, “The members of the Florida State University Symphony and I are thrilled to finally open our season on October 12. Our schedule opener on September 27 was canceled due to Hurricane Helene, and although we all feel fortunate to be safe and able to perform, our hearts go out to all those affected by this terrible storm. Music provides solace, and we look forward to providing our audience with the peace and beauty that great music can bring.”
The concert program promises a dynamic and captivating evening of music. It will open with the vibrant “Fête” (Celebration) from Claude Debussy’s Nocturnes, an orchestral work that paints a lively scene of community celebration. The evening’s solo performance will feature Geoffrey Deibel, Professor of Saxophone at FSU, who will perform Jeanine Rueff’s Concertino for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra, making its Tallahassee debut.
The program will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s monumental Symphony No. 5, a piece known for its emotional intensity and powerful orchestral writing.
The FSU Symphony Orchestra is regarded as one of the nation’s leading university orchestras. Comprising a talented mix of undergraduate and graduate students, many of its members perform with professional ensembles throughout the region. Under the baton of Dr. Jimenez, the orchestra has garnered critical acclaim for their performances and recordings on prestigious labels such as Naxos, Mark Masters, and Neos.
This concert marks the orchestra’s return to the stage and is an event not to be missed. Tickets are available through the College of Music’s online box office at tickets.music.fsu.edu or in person.
