What is Medical Music Therapy?

Medical Music Therapy is an established health profession using music and music interventions to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of children and adults with disabilities or illnesses. Medical Music Therapists participate in interdisciplinary treatment planning, ongoing evaluation, and follow-up.

Medical Music Therapy at TMH
  • Provides clinical music therapy services to TMH patients.
  • Serves as a national training site for music therapy interns.
  • Provides training and supervision for FSU music therapy majors in clinical practica.
  • Conducts research on innovative uses of medical music therapy; and
  • Serves as a national model for training allied health professionals in the medical uses of music therapy.

Founded in 1948, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) is a private, not-for-profit community healthcare system committed to transforming care, advancing health, and improving lives with an ultimate vision of leading the community to be the healthiest in the nation. Serving a 17-county region in North Florida and South Georgia, TMH is a 772 bed full-service regional medical center with multiple inpatient and outpatient specialty facilities. TMH provides music therapy services through group and individual sessions for premature infants through seniors. The Music Therapists at TMH utilize music and cognitive behavioral techniques to meet non-musical goals. Goals and objectives include cognitive stimulation, reality orientation, rehabilitation of physical and cognitive abilities, enhanced coping skills, pain and anxiety management, increased sucking endurance, mood elevation, and normalization of environment.

Training
Music therapy interns at TMH have the opportunity to observe, co-lead, and lead individual and group sessions in all units and facilities. Interns participate in treatment team meetings, document patient progress daily, weekly, and monthly, implement patient assessment and evaluation, and complete case studies and special projects. Additionally, interns receive specialized training in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which makes them eligible to receive an additional certification in NICU Music Therapy.
