Scholarships and Funding

All music majors are automatically considered for College of Music scholarships based on their admissions application and audition or interview.

The College of Music admissions requirements exceed University minimum standards. Official English Language Proficiency results are required of all applicants who are citizens of a country where English is not an official language, including applicants who have already studied in an English speaking country for any length of time.
For admission, attain the minimum required score on one of the following exams:
- TOEFL IBT
- Master’s: 80 (if taken before January 21, 2026) or 4.0 (if taken on or after January 21, 2026)
- Doctoral: 97 (if taken before January 21, 2026) or 5.0 (if taken on or after January 21, 2026)
- IELTS
- Master’s: 6.5
- Doctoral: 7.5
- Duolingo English Test
- Master’s: 120
- Doctoral: 135
Additionally, to be eligible for a teaching assistantship:

- Students must score a minimum of 26 (if taken before January 21, 2026) or 5.0 (if taken on or after January 21, 2026) on the speaking portion of the IBTOEFL or;
- Achieve a score of 50 on the SPEAK Test (offered by FSU) to qualify for a graduate assistantship.

What is the purpose of this exam?
This exam will help you and the examiners determine your entry level into the Group Piano Program at Florida State. If you are entering your first semester of Group Piano at FSU and choose not to take the exam, you will automatically sign up for MVK 1111 A.
When is the exam administered?
Placement exams are offered on the Friday prior to start of Fall term in the Longmire Building (LON 403) from 2:30 until 5:00 pm. No appointment is necessary. An online option on a different day is also available. Exams are administered on a first come, first served basis, and will last approximately 10 minutes. Who should take the exam?
Students with prior keyboard experience, whose degree programs require one or more semesters of class piano. (Check the program of study for your major to determine the piano requirement for your major.) Keyboard majors do not need to take this exam.
Transfer students with Class Piano credit should consult Dr. Hunt regarding transfer evaluations.
