Jane Clendinning
Jane Piper Clendinning is a Professor of Music Theory at the Florida State University College of Music, where she has taught since 1990. Her research and teaching interests include theory and analysis of late twentieth-century, world, and popular musics, and the pedagogy of music theory. She has studied and performed with the FSU College of Music World Music Program’s Sekaa Gong Hanuman Agung (Balinese gamelan), Aconcagua (Andean music), Mas-N-Steel (Caribbean Steel Band), Chinese Zheng ensemble, and African Drumming and Dance ensemble. She was the founding director of the Cawthon Hall Living-Learning Center.
She is the author (with Elizabeth West Marvin) of The Musician’s Guide to Theory and Analysis (textbook, workbook, and anthology, W. W. Norton, 4th edition 2021) and (with Joel Phillips and Elizabeth West Marvin) of The Musician’s Guide to Fundamentals (W. W. Norton, 3rd edition 2018). Her service to the Society for Music Theory includes elected terms as Treasurer and Vice-President, as well as membership on many national committees. She has served on the editorial boards of Twentieth-Century Music, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Music Theory Online, College Music Symposium, and Computers in Music Research. She was chair of the College Board Music Theory Advanced Placement (AP) Test Development Committee and is a Consultant and Reader for AP Music Theory. She is a founder of the regional society Music Theory Southeast, which she served as President and as Treasurer.
Clendinning holds the Ph.D. in Music Theory from Yale University, with prior degrees from North Texas State University and Samford University.
