The FSU College of Music is pleased to welcome Dr. Rachel Hottle to our music theory faculty. A distinguished scholar of popular music, Hottle’s research explores fascinating questions of embodiment, instrumentality, form, and narrative, with a particular focus on the music of the American folk revival. Her innovative work—notably recognized with the SMT-40 Dissertation Fellowship for her project, “Elizabeth Cotten, Joni Mitchell, and the Guitar/Body Interface”—has appeared in Music Theory Online and is forthcoming in the Journal of Music Theory. Beyond her active research and presentations at major national conferences, including the Society for Music Theory (SMT) and the American Musicological Society, she serves the broader academic community as the Secretary of the Popular Music Interest Group of the SMT. Hottle holds the BA from Swarthmore College and received the MA and PhD in Music Theory from McGill University. Her rich interdisciplinary perspective and dedication to scholarship will deeply enrich our music theory program and inspire our students.
