Rainbow Concert of World Music

The Florida State University College of Music is proud to announce the 29th annual Rainbow Concert of World Music, taking place on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. in the Opperman Music Hall. This year’s celebration of global sounds features special guest artists Väsen-Duo, widely considered the most famous Swedish folk musicians performing today.

Väsen-Duo: (L-R) Mikael Marin, viola and Olov Johansson, nyckelharpa.

Comprised of Olov Johansson on the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) and Mikael Marin on the viola and bass viola, Väsen-Duo brings over 40 years of playful and perfect interplay. Their music is a unique language—at once ancient and modern—rooted in the traditional music of Uppland, Sweden. Known for their collaborations with the likes of Snarky Puppy and the Kronos Quartet, as well as appearances on NPR’s Tiny Desk and A Prairie Home Companion, the duo’s performance promises an evening of intense, humorous, and rhythmically sophisticated artistry.

Throughout their week-long residency at FSU, Väsen-Duo will also work with College of Music students in the Early Music and World Music ensembles. The Rainbow Concert serves as the residency’s grand finale, featuring the duo in a solo set as well as collaborative performances with FSU’s Old Time, Brazilian, and Early Music Ensembles, and culminating in a massive mixed-ensemble finale.

New Community Engagement Initiatives

In an effort to bridge the gap between the university and the Tallahassee community, the FSU Musicology and Community Music areas are offering a free community workshop with the duo during their residency.

“Our goal is to create more opportunities for shared music-making beyond the walls of FSU,” said Carrie Danielson, Assistant Professor of Musicology and Les and Ruth Akers Endowed Chair in Community Music. “We want to connect these world-class visiting artists with the broader Tallahassee community in a hands-on, meaningful way.”

The workshop is open to community musicians of all backgrounds who are comfortable learning by ear. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required via the official registration link. Attendees are encouraged to stay for the following potluck and jam session to enjoy the music and gardens.
