The Florida State University College of Music is proud to announce its continued participation in the Festival of the Creative Arts, a month-long celebration of interdisciplinary innovation hosted by the FSU Office of Research. Running throughout February and early March, the festival showcases the College’s commitment to collaborative performance, music education research, and the fusion of sound with technology.
“The festival is a special opportunity for everyone to be inspired by the creative spirit that defines FSU,” said Iain Quinn, Festival Director and FSU Research Fellow. “In addition to ongoing research conversations, there are also new collaborations and multiple first performances.”
The College of Music will be featured in several events, highlighting the versatility of its students and faculty across genres and disciplines:
Poets at the Party
Friday, Feb. 6 | 7:30 p.m. | Nancy Smith Fichter Dance Theatre
Experience a vibrant intersection of movement and melody. This event features members of the FSU Trombone Choir in a multi-disciplinary collaboration with the departments of Dance, Hospitality, and Poetry. The evening will include several world premieres, blending brass performance with poetic and choreographic expression.
It’s the Weather!
Saturday, Feb. 7 | 10 a.m. | Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee
Designed for K-12 students and families, this interactive event explores the scientific world through an artistic lens. The FSU Guitar Ensemble will provide the sonic backdrop for a day of hands-on discovery, which includes the premiere of a new interdisciplinary work combining digital art and music. College of Music faculty members Eren Gümrükçüoğlu and Ann Harringtonfrom will join colleagues from Art History and Art Education to bridge the gap between art and the elements.
Arts-Health-Humanities Symposium VI
Tuesday, Feb. 10 | 12:00 p.m. | Claude Pepper Center
The College of Music continues its leadership in the healing arts during this sixth annual symposium. Faculty and students from Music Therapy, Music Education, and Musicology—including Michael Bakan, Professor of Musicology, and doctoral music therapy student Adriana Lizardi-Vázquez—will engage with the College of Medicine and Department of Design. The event features poster presentations and discussions on the vital role of music in health and human research.
Chamber Music of Frank Martin
Sunday, Feb. 22 | 4:00 p.m. | Longmire Recital Hall (LON)
Faculty performers from the College of Music are joined by Amy Dill, Specialized Teaching Faculty from the Department of Classics, in a concert devoted to the music of the great Swiss composer Frank Martin (1890-1974).
All festival events are free of charge and open to the public; no reservations are required.
