FSU Professor Rodney Jordan Featured in DownBeat Magazine

Florida State University College of Music faculty member Rodney Jordan, Professor and Area Coordinator of Jazz Studies, is featured in the October 2025 issue of DownBeat Magazine, one of the most widely read publications in the global jazz community. His article, “Your Sound Is Your Calling Card,” guides bassists in developing their unique voice through studying masters, refining sound production, and practicing intentional listening and technique.

Drawing on the work of legends like Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, and Ron Carter, Jordan offers both technical and artistic insights. His framework—imitation, assimilation, and innovation—helps musicians cultivate a personal musical signature.

A faculty member since 2001, Jordan has mentored generations of jazz students at FSU. He is a respected performer and educator, known for helping students discover their artistic identity. “The article reflects ideas I’ve shared with my students for years,” Jordan said.

He also emphasized DownBeat’s role in the jazz world: “It’s where students go first for information on recordings, books, techniques, and technology.” Publication in DownBeat places Jordan’s work alongside leading voices in jazz education and performance, extending the reach of ideas he has long shared with his students. The October issue also features the FSU College of Music in its annual “Best Colleges to Study Jazz” edition, further underscoring the program’s excellence and national reputation. Achievements like this strengthen the College’s standing as a place where world-class artistry, scholarship, and mentorship intersect.
