FSU Music Theatre Alumni to Perform in Productions of Jesus Christ Superstar
February 28, 2018
This spring, both the Chicago Lyric Opera and NBC will present productions of the 1970 rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar (Andrew Lloyd Webber, music; Tim Rice, lyrics), and alumni from the FSU College of Music’s music theatre program will be involved in both. Angel Lozada (BM, musical theatre ’17) will sing in the ensemble in the Chicago Lyric Opera’s production, which runs from April 27 to May 20, 2018. Lozada (pictured below) will also be the understudy for the role of Jesus, which was approved by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. Another proud Seminole, Mykal Kilgore, will also be featured in the Chicago Lyric Opera’s production, performing the role of Simon Zealotes. Lozada and Kilgore will join Florida State University alumnus Mike Evariste (BM, music theatre ’03) in the ensemble for the NBC’s live concert performance of Jesus Christ Superstar, which will be broadcast on Easter Sunday (April 1). NBC’s production will feature John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, and Alice Cooper as King Herod. Brandon Victor Dixon, formerly in the Broadway cast of Hamilton, will star as Judas.
Jesus Christ Superstar premiered on Broadway in 1971 and was nominated for five Tony Awards. The show was revived in 1977, 2000, and 2012.
Graduates of the music theatre program at Florida State University perform regularly on and off Broadway throughout North America, as well as on film and television.
