Submit One-to-One forms to Melanie Presnell in 203 HMU or via email: mpresnell@fsu.edu.  One-to-One forms are used when you need to enroll in one-on-one courses like DIS courses.  You will receive the course reference number(s) needed to register for applied lessons (if applicable) and other one-on-one instruction courses.

Signup for Graduate Placement Exam in Music Theory – Aug. 17–19, 2021

The Graduate Music Theory Placement Exam will be offered in a fully computerized format
on Canvas, FSU’s online learning system. You will be taking this exam from home on your own
computer. You must use the Chrome web browser and download Honorlock in order to take
this exam. The exam will be available on Canvas from 8 AM to 5 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday,
and Thursday, August 17th, 18th, and 19th
You have a maximum of two hours to complete it.
You choose date and time. Make sure that your selection does not overlap with any other
required meetings!

When you click the link above you will be asked for relevant contact information, the day you wish
to take the exam, and for your FSUID: this is your Canvas login, and is also the username that
precedes “@my.fsu.edu” of your campus email address—e.g., “jck21” or “jk21e.”  Dr. Kraus will
then register you on Canvas for the exam.  The deadline for completing the online registration
form is Wednesday, August 11th at 5 PM
.  Once you are registered for the exam on Canvas, you
will receive an email invitation to join the exam site.  You will need to accept this invitation.

THEORY PLACEMENT EXAM REGISTRATION:  
- The Music Theory entrance exam is required for all new graduate music students who have never earned a graduate degree from our College of Music, (except music therapy majors).
- Covers topics from the first three semesters of undergraduate theory:  (1) Realization of figured bass, (2) identification of part-writing errors, (3) the proper identification and resolution of chromatic harmonies (secondary dominant and leading tone chords, modal mixture, Neapolitan and augmented sixths), and (4) form and analysis (formal type, phrase structure, motivic process, cadence identification, chromatic chord identification).
- The exam does not cover ear training, sight singing, or post-tonal music.
- Any mainstream undergraduate theory textbook may be used to review for this exam.

GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT TRAINING

Work environment matters, TA policies, Canvas platform, Turnitin, class grade roster and grade assignment information, etc.

Required of graduate assistantship recipients who will be working with other students in a classroom and/or applied lesson setting. Those with an office/accompanying graduate assistantship are not required to attend.

CLASS PIANO PLACEMENT EXAM

This brief exam is only for Music Education and Music Therapy majors whose principal instrument is not piano. Piano majors/principals do NOT need to attend.  No appointment is necessary. Exams are administered on a first come, first served basis, and will last approximately 10 minutes. FEE PAYMENT DEADLINE
Last day to pay or defer tuition, housing or fees for all students, including veterans who are not using a veteran deferment, without a $100 late fee. Veterans should contact a VA representative with questions.
(Students who fail to pay or request a deferral by today will be dropped from their courses.)

Registration dates and deadlines are found within the “Enrollment Appointments” calendar.  Failure to enroll for classes by the registration deadlines each semester will result in a $100 late registration fee.

Please consult the faculty in your degree area for course advising.  Although the Graduate Music Office can provide very general guidelines, the faculty are best-equipped to provide you with specific advising related to your major.
