College Welcomes Five New Faculty

As the fall semester begins, the College of Music is proud to announce the addition of five new faculty members to the Clarinet, Musicology, Organ, and Voice areas. Please join us as we welcome:

Dr. Chuck Chandler, tenor, is Assistant Professor of Voice at Florida State University (his alma mater). His prior teaching experience includes Reinhardt University and Shorter College, where he was director of the Guest Artist Series and New Music Series. His students have been finalists and won awards in competitions including the National Orpheus Vocal Competition and the KY Bach Competition; they find frequent summer stock work, have been nominated for the ACTF Irene Ryan award, and have been accepted into and offered prestigious teaching assistantships at many of the finest graduate programs in the country.


Sarah Eyerly, Assistant Professor of Musicology, holds a M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology and criticism from the University of California, Davis, and a M.M. in historical performance practices from the Mannes College of Music. As a Fulbright Fellow to the Netherlands, she studied historical performance practices, including baroque rhetoric, gesture, and ornamentation at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague. Her research explores the close relationship between the art of memory, literacy, and improvisation, as represented by archival records from the eighteenth-century German and American utopian communes of the Moravian church. She is currently working on a book manuscript, Utopia Improvised: the Heavenly Lotteries of the Moravian Church, which details the literate practice of Moravian improvisers.


Jonathan Holden is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Florida State University, Principal Clarinetist of the West Michigan Symphony, and a member of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. A frequent guest of numerous orchestras, he has performed with ensembles such as the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Baton Rouge and Lansing Symphony Orchestras, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Mobile Symphony and the Sarasota Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Vireo Ensemble (clarinet, violin, cello, piano) and the Argot Trio (clarinet, violin, piano). Holden has given performances, clinics, and masterclasses at collegiate establishments in the US and overseas including Vanderbilt, Michigan State University, and the national conservatories of Panama and Paris.


A native of Cardiff, Wales, Dr. Iain Quinn enjoys a distinguished career as an organist, musicologist, and composer. He began his study of the organ with Robert Court and Nicolas Kynaston, having already studied the piano and trumpet. In 1994, he moved to the US to pursue advanced study at The Juilliard School, The Hartt School, University of Hartford, (BM, summa cum laude), and the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University (MM). His principal teachers were John Weaver, Larry Allen, Thomas Murray, William Porter (improvisation) and Nathan Williamson (composition). In 2009, he returned to the UK as a Doctoral Fellow at the University of Durham during which time he was also a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University. He completed his PhD (Historical Musicology) in 2012. Dr. Quinn has given regular performances in many of the world’s most important centers, and he has also performed at many international festivals.


Sherri Weiler is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Florida State University in Tallahassee for the 2013-14 academic year. She received both the BA and M.Ed degrees from Clemson University. She received the MM degree in Voice Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and the DM degree from Florida State University in 2004. Dr. Weiler has taught voice at Alaska Pacific University, University of Alaska Anchorage, Florida A&M University, and Florida State University. She was Associate Professor of Music at Shorter University in Rome, GA, teaching voice, voice class, Russian diction, and vocal pedagogy from 2004-2012. She has performed in high profile venues at home and abroad including the mezzo-soprano solo in Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky with the Russian National Symphony in October 1992. Weiler has contributed articles to several trade journals and serves on the editorial board Journal of Singing.
