Music Theatre

Gayle Seaton - Program Director of Music Theatre

Our success is demonstrated by our many graduates employed on Broadway and in national touring productions, regional theatres, and other venues.

The Florida State University College of Music's Bachelor of Music track in Music Theatre is a professional program, run jointly with the School of Theatre's Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Music Theatre and with the cooperation of the Dance Department. It is designed to create music theatre performers who are truly "triple threats," trained in singing, acting, and dancing, and who are prepared to work professionally when they complete the program. Although the students work in each area separately and in fact are generally treated to both schools as majors, the greatest strength of the program is its joint nature, allowing the faculty and the students to understand and explore the connections and to bring all three areas together.

Besides performing in the regular Music Theatre Productions, Music Theatre students are encouraged to perform in as many venues as possible. The College of Music offers a wide range of performance opportunities, including operas and a multitude of ensemble experiences. In addition, Music Theatre students have danced in University Dance productions and performde in plays by such authors as Shakespeare and Chekhov on The Mainstage. Each year, graduating students present a Senior Showcase, performed in New York City, with two performances for an audience of invited agents and casting directors, master teachers, producers, alumni, and friends.

Florida State University offers both a Bachelor of Music in Performance (Music Theatre) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre. For a comparison of the two degrees, click here.
