The Florida State University College of Music is pleased to offer Levels I and II or the Orff-Schulwerk Teacher Education Course this summer. Orff-Schulwerk centers on the development of the
whole child while encouraging continued development
of the teacher. Designed for all children, the Orff-Schulwerk technique enables students to create good music immediately!
The course itself provides
a non competitive atmosphere where one of the
rewards is the pleasure of making good music with
others.
Tuition

$495 Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
The
course offers 3 semester hours of academic credit
each at the undergraduate or graduate levels. All those who are not current FSU students and who are registering for academic credit must complete the FSU Special Student Form before the start of the course. This form is available on the FSU Academic & Professional website: http://learningforlife.fsu.edu (select Academic Credit, the Credit Registration). Teachers wishing in-service hours should bring the necessary forms from their schools/districts at the time of the course. Non-credit students may receive 6.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the courses

Content
Level
I is designed for anyone with musical training
who wishes to acquire basic knowledge and pedagogic
foundation in the Orff-Schulwerk approach.
This course is recommended for those with no previous Orff-Schulwerk training and will include: studying basic Orff techniques
including the use of pentatonic scales, simple bordun,
ostinato, and elemental forms; basic body movements
including structured and creative movement and their
application to the Schulwerk;
vocal and rhythmic training; improvisation, and soprano recorder.
Level II is designed for those who have satisfactorily completed an Orff-Schulwerk Level I course. This course will include: the study of all pentatonic scales; review of simple and moving borduns; I-V and I-IV accompaniments; explanation of rhythmic training and continuation into irregular rhythms and meters; vocal, movement, and instrumental improvisation; and soprano and alto recorders.

Evaluation
Students
will be evaluated on the basis of the following
overall criteria:
1.
Participation in class activities
2. Completion of written assignments
3. Preparation and performance of ensemble selections
involving use of singing, movement, recorder,
and Orff instruments
4. Attendance - 100% attendance required

Instructors
Carla Cose-Giallella (Level I) , has taught instrumental, choral, and general music for twenty years in public and private schools in Iowa and Arizona; she is an active clinician presenting workshops at the local, regional, and national level. Ms. Cose-Giallella teaches pre-kindergarten through fourth grade at Phoenix Country Day School in Paradise Valley, Arizona. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Iowa State University and a Masters of Music degree from the University of Arizona; she is currently a doctoral student in music education with an emphasis in early childhood at Arizona State University. Ms. Cose-Giallella has served on the National Board of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and is past president of the Arizona Orff-Schulwerk Association.
Marilyn Wood (Level II) holds a Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Oklahoma Baptist University. Currently, Ms. Wood is an associate professor at Middle Tennessee State University. Ms. Wood is certified in Orff-Schulwerk through the Master Class level from the University of Memphis. She has presented workshops in 30 different states as well as sessions at five National Orff-Schulwerk conferences, and at a Music Teachers National Associations’ national convention. She has been teaching Orff-Schulwerk certification courses (Levels I and II) since 1991.
Karen
Blooding (Recorder) has
taught elementary general music in Tennessee for
18 years in Tennessee where she was named 2005 Tennessee Teacher
of the Year, and is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University. A National Board Certified Teacher in Early and Middle Childhood Music, she has studied vocal performance at Colorado State University, as well as music history and conducting at Southern Methodist University. She hold certificates in Orff Levels I,
II and III, and specializes in recorder instruction.
Ms. Blooding holds a Bachelor of Music degree and a Master
of Arts in Teaching degree from Middle Tennessee
State University.

These courses will be held on the Florida State University campus. Classes are scheduled for Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Housing
Options
On-campus housing will be available in an FSU dormitory. Dorm rooms generally include a microwave and a small refrigerator and are within walking distance of the university dining halls. Housing is also available at a number of nearby hotels.
